The Countryside

Piantek, 6 Sierpien 1993

First look, coming into Warsaw: it's beautiful, like some eastern U.S. town; homes with long, narrow fields behind them. Boxy apartment buildings, but, again, with fields everywhere. Clusters of homes along roads dividing squares of brown and green. Or gold and green.

As you get closer to the ground, they start to look a little scraggly. Touch down. The rough pavement [ described in a 1986 Rolling Stone article ] is still here.
